Breakfast for Lunch: Smoked Salmon Scramble at Cacao 70 (10430 82 Ave.)
Cacao 70 Eatery on Whyte Avenue - I came here for brunch. I had a mocha, which tasted like a melted chocolate bar without any hint of coffee. It read to me more like a rich hot chocolate. My smoked salmon scramble was meh - maybe 5 pieces of smoked salmon with a salad, a portion of scrambled eggs (the best part of the meal), toasted panini, and potato wedges that were limp and had an off taste to them. Also, I noticed that the the woman who was making the hot drinks kept coughing and coughing, and although she was covering it with her sleeve, it made me uncomfortable. Service was adequate, and prices are rather high. I wish the food matched the decor.View this post on InstagramA post shared by Paula E. Kirman (@livingsanctuary) on
Breakfast for Lunch: Brisket Hash at Rooster (10732 82 Ave.)
Brisket hash with potatoes, caramelized onions, micro greens, and two eggs added. For me, hash has to have eggs. The brisket is perfectly braised with quite a bit of fat. The greens add some lightness to the flavour. This is supposedly a small plate but the portion is quite hefty. (Not complaining.)View this post on InstagramA post shared by Paula E. Cake For Breakfast at Rebel
This multi-layered confetti cake is always on Rebel's dessert menu, but on weekends it is also part of the brunch menu as "Cake for Breakfast." My response? If eating cake for breakfast is wrong, I don't want to be right! I especially liked the Fruit Loops in the icing and on the plate. It was missing the fruit pebbles and glass of milk, but I could not finish this as it was. I also learned the hard way not to try to pull the sparkler out of the cake immediately after it goes out. Ouch! This was a memorable experience for several reasons!Who wouldn’t want cake for breakfast? #yeg #yegfood #yegeats #brunch #foodporn

Vegging Out: Breakfast Bowl at The Moth
The Moth is the buzz of Boyle Street. On my first venture there, I had the Moth's Breakfast Bowl, an attractive dish with scrambled tofu, vegan sausage, potatoes, several different vegetables, and three long stalks of asparagus on top of a small bed of brown rice, with a slightly acidic, cashew-based sauce to the side. The flavours went together really well: the slightly salty tofu with the grilled vegetables, sweet sausage, and tomatoes that tasted marinated. The portion was also significant. The Moth’s breakfast bowl. #yegfood #yegeats #foodporn #vegetarian #vegan #yeh

Breakfast for Lunch: Vegan Bowl at The Needle
The Needle Vinyal Cafe has a weekend brunch featuring a special menu and musical performers. I dropped by a couple of weekends ago and had the vegan bowl, which is a tofu "egg" scramble with red peppers and jalapenos over breakfast potatoes. I held the jalapenos, and am glad I did. I find The Needle's food to be rather spicy, and there was more than enough kick without that ingredient. The plentiful tofu had a curry flavour, and the potatoes, which was an extremely generous portion, were hand-cut and well-seasoned. Overall, this was a very filling brunch item that is ideal for vegans.Tofu breakfast scramble. #yegfood #yegbrunch #vegan

Breakfast for Lunch: Smoked Meat Scrambler at Jay Bee's
I had my first experience ay Jay Bee's (3633 188 Avenue) this past weekend, as the person I was with told me his workmates recommended the place highly. This is a diner with all of the things you would expect to find on the menu: breakfast, burgers, sandwiches, pasta, pizza, and traditional mains like fish and chips and hot turkey. Some of the breakfast offerings are quite unique for this sort of establishment, like the option of beef sausages and turkey bacon with your eggs. I had one of the "scrambles" with smoked meat. It was more like a flat omelette that was so huge, it covered the plate. Underneath was a bagel which was very fresh and actually tasted like a bagel (as opposed to some places where bagels just taste like bread in a round shape), and hash browns. The server said they were going to be cubes, but they were small strings that were a bit greasy, and a bit overcooked in places, but then again this is a "greasy spoon" sort of place. My eggs tasted heavily from the smoked meat, as it should have, and the onions were sweet and cooked. I held the marble cheese that would also have been a part of the dish. I was totally stuffed at the end, and the dish was less than $15. The place was clean, spacious, and the service was good - my server went back to the kitchen several times to get answers to my questions. I will definitely be back if I am in Beverly, and I hope future visits will live up to this one.Smoked meat scrambler #yegfood #eatalberta150

Breakfast for Lunch: House Breakfast at Friends and Neighbours
I had a late brunch this afternoon at Friends and Neighbours (10834 82 Avenue) and did not feel like something super heavy. I opted for one of the many vegetarian choices, the House Breakfast. Usually something with that name will have a meaty component, but this plate of two eggs any style, toast, and hash browns was accented with a spinach and craisin salad, as well as lots of avocado. I think there was probably an entire avocado cut up on my plate, and it was perfectly ripe. I enjoyed putting avocado and craisins on my toast, and using it to sop up my over-easy eggs. This was definitely more substantial than it looked.
Breakfast for Lunch: Chicken and Waffles at MEAT
I was so impressed with my brunch at MEAT last weekend, that I went back this past Saturday to try the chicken and waffles. This was previously chicken with corn pancakes. The mean still came with two pieces of MEAT's fried chicken (a leg and a thigh), as well as butter and rosemary-infused maple syrup. The two Belgian waffles were hot off the grill and very sweet. The chicken could have been a bit hotter, and the coating this time was a little more on the soggy than crunchy side, but the flavour was all there. An almost-perfect pairing.
Breakfast for Lunch: MEAT Breakfast
I ventured into MEAT for brunch a week or so ago, finding that it is still one of the few places along Whyte serving brunch where I can still get a seat. I noticed that the brunch menu has changed a wee bit, and opted for a new item: the MEAT breakfast, consisting of two eggs any style, hash browns, toast, and a choice of bacon or sausage. My eggs over-medium were perfect, and the hash browns have changed from a patty similar to a potato pancake, to a generous portion of fried and seasoned potato chunks (and I think the seasoning may have included parmesan). Instead of the pork products, I substituted with some of the pulled brisket used for MEAT's brisket benny and sandwich. The combination worked really well, and they sure gave me a lot of it. This was a hearty brunch that was well done.MEAT breakfast - eggs, hash browns, and brisket instead of pork. Toast is coming. #yegfood

Breakfast for Lunch: Huevos Rancheros at the Blue Chair Cafe
It's been a while since I had brunch at the Blue Chair Cafe. I had the huevos rancheros (minus the cheese): two eggs fried sunny side up on top of a mountain of black beans, ranchero sauce, and corn tortillas, topped with another mountain of salsa and pico de gallo. I could have done without the mountain of lettuce which only hid the beautiful eggs beneath it, and added little in the way of flavour. Otherwise, this was a perfect plate of brunch goodness.

Breakfast for Lunch: Steak and Eggs at Next Act
The peace group with which I am involved decided to get together for lunch after a picket on a recent Saturday afternoon, and The Next Act was nearby and convenient - and, lucky for us, the big table at the back was available. I had steak and eggs, as the brunch menu was still in effect. The steak was tender and juicy, with the eggs perfectly done and a heaping order of the seasoned hash browns. Satisfying, indeed.
