Padmanadi Platter and Singapore Noodles

Clever Rabbit

View this post on Instagram

Tried Clever Rabbit for the first time and was impressed with the menu’s variety: all day breakfast, and lots of options that mimic meat foods like donairs and the club sandwich I had with "bacon" and "turkey". The spinach and tomatoes were also piled high with mayo and dijon. I had hash browns as my side. My friend had the battered tofu bowl with sweet potato hash (it came with a side even though it was a rice dish). She said that was her favourite part of the meal. The tofu was good, and the veggies were cooked nicely. The sweet and sour sauce (you have a choice) was actually at the bottom of the bowl, so you had to dig for it. #yeg #yegfood #vegetarian #vegan #plantbased #yegfoodie #yegeats

Vegan Iced Coffee at Padmanadi (10740 101 Street)

Happiness is a vegan iced coffee. This is like poetry in a picture of a beverage.

Seafood Delight at Padmanadi (10740 101 Street)

Seafood delight and noodle - love that the noodles were tossed with a hint of sauce.

"Not Pot Pie" at The Moth (9449 Jasper Ave.)

"Not pot pie" filled with vegetables in a crunch whole wheat crust. Deceptively filling. I am glad I ordered the half avocado to lighten it a bit. The iced cashew chai is my new favourite drink.

Vegging Out: Breakfast Bowl at The Moth

The Moth’s breakfast bowl. #yegfood #yegeats #foodporn #vegetarian #vegan #yeh

The Moth is the buzz of Boyle Street. On my first venture there, I had the Moth's Breakfast Bowl, an attractive dish with scrambled tofu, vegan sausage, potatoes, several different vegetables, and three long stalks of asparagus on top of a small bed of brown rice, with a slightly acidic, cashew-based sauce to the side. The flavours went together really well: the slightly salty tofu with the grilled vegetables, sweet sausage, and tomatoes that tasted marinated. The portion was also significant.

Vegging Out: Pho and Vermicelli at An Chay

Vietnamese is one of my favourite kinds of cuisine and being a non-pork and seafood eater, vegan works well for me. An Chay (11203 Jasper Avenue) is spacious, bright, and has lots of comfortable seating. The menu features spring rolls, soups, and vermicelli bowls, with the twist of everything being plant-based. Tofu and soy is mostly used for the protein. I had a vegan pho and found the flavour profile of the broth to be excellent, with lots of noodles, soft tofu, lotus root, and different kinds of mushrooms.

On a subsequent visit I ordered the three-colour vermicelli. The "pork" was very flavourful, and the mint leaves added a lot of refreshment to the dish. I almost never eat all of the salad part of the bowl, but this time I did. The "fish sauce" added a little heat but was not overpowering the way I find real fish sauce to be. Also, the spring rolls are crispy and fantastic.

Vegging Out: Margherita Pizza at Die Pie

It's no secret that cheese and I don't get along well. I don't like it's flavour, texture, or smell, and quite frankly, it doesn't sit with me very well. Enter Die Pie. Or, should I say, I entered Die Pie. I was a bit hesitant because i figured if I don't really like real cheese, would I like a vegan substitute any more? I sat down at one of the wooden tables and ordered a margherita, the most basic 10-inch pizza which uses cashew as a cheese substitute (hemp is available for those with nut allergies, as is a gluten-free crust). The pizza was amazing. The creamy dollops of "cheese" had a very mellow flavour, the thick sauce accounting for most of the pizza's flavour as well as the freshness of the basil. It was like bruschetta, but enhanced. I'll definitely be back to try another pizza.

Beef and Vegan Sausage at Otto

I finally got a chance to visit Otto this past week, and it definitely lived up to the hype. A very cozy neighbourhood establishment, it wasn't all that busy on a Friday night. My server was very friendly and helpful. I loved how the menu was divided into pork and non-pork sausage options. I had the beef bratwurst and a vegan sausage. The vegan sausage was hearty, totally nailed the texture, and had a slightly sweet taste to it. The beef bratwurst was incredible. I'm not a huge fan of beef sausages because I find they often taste like hot dogs, and I don't love hot dogs. However, this sausage had more of a texture and flavour reminiscent of a kofta kebab - ground beef with seasonings in a very thin casing. Intensely flavourful. For my side I had a small dill coleslaw, and it was extremely fresh without the dill being overpowering.

Superfood Soup at Freshii

A very layered superfood soup. #yegfood

A post shared by Paula E. Kirman (@livingsanctuary) on

I needed something fast and healthy after being at an event, which rn well past the lunch hour one Saturday. I headed to Freshii at 103 and Jasper, and had the Superfood Soup. The soup was served in a plastic container, and the contents were very layered. This meant I ate one element of the soup at a time, until I got closer to the bottom when the quinoa started to rise. The flavour was very mellow, with a sweetness to the tofu. The soup was very hot and filling, and I knew I was eating something healthy.

Chicken and Waffles at The Buckingham

#Vegan chicken and waffles. Yes, such a thing exists, and not just in my dreams. #yegfood

A post shared by Paula E. Kirman (@livingsanctuary) on

I was in a vegan frame of mind a couple of weekends ago, so headed for The Buckingham, as I was on Whyte Avenue enjoying live music. I like the place - it has a good vibe, and the fact that half the menu is vegan sets it apart from the other pubs in the area. I had the chicken and waffles. The "chicken" had a good texture and crispy coating, but I did not like the hot sauce poured all over the waffles. Hot sauce and waffles do not mix. I had to keep adding maple syrup to temper the heat and flavour, and it just got very messy and unappealing. In general, I don't like food that is heavily sauced, but this was really too much. When I return, I will definitely try something else.

The Pho Files: Vegan Pho at XO Bistro

Vegan pho #yegfood

A post shared by Paula E. Kirman (@livingsanctuary) on

I visited XO Bistro on the advice of my brother, who says the vegan pho is excellent. It was. What made the soup was the broth, which is a true vegan broth but has much more flavour than other ones I have encountered. I ordered the small size, which was ample enough for lunch and slightly more expensive than Chinatown (not a surprise, given the location and upscale interior). I especially liked the tofu, which was fried but firm. Definitely deserving of a repeat visit.

Breakfast for Lunch: Farmer's Breakfast Skillet at Friends and Neighbours

Farmer's breakfast skillet - all veggie! #yegfood

A photo posted by Paula E. Kirman (@livingsanctuary) on

A late lunch a couple of weeks ago at Friend and Neighbours (10834 82 Avenue) allowed me to further explore the abundant vegetarian menu. The Farmer's Breakfast Skillet was a sight to behold, with potatoes, a tofu scramble with kale, sweet and smoky tofu (which doubles in some dishes as veggie bacon), and crispy tofu. This meal really could have been called "Tofu Three Ways." I found the crispy tofu sort of difficult to eat since it crumbled very easily, and the bites that were not perfectly crispy were hard to chew. Some imitation ham or sausage may have been a better choice. Oh, and there was toast. This is the ultimate vegan breakfast.

Vegging Out: Quinoa Black Bean Soup and Fries at Sailin' On

Quinoa black bean soup #yegfood

I was performing at the Earth Day Festival over the weekend, with food provided by vegan food truck Sailin' On. The weather was quite damp and chilly, so after my first setI warmed myself up with a bowl of quinoa black bean soup. The quinoa made it very thick and hearty, with a bit of spice and a colourful topping of tomatoes and avocado. It really hit the spot.

A little later in the afternoon after I played another set, I had an order of plain fries (they come plain or with a couple of different toppings). The freshly cut fries were not too greasy, enhanced with coarse salt, and delicious. I've never had fries from Sailin' On before, and I can see (and taste) why they are so popular.

Vegging Out: General Tao Chicken at Padmanadi

General Tao Chicken #yegfood

A family supper brought me back to Padmanadi this weekend. I decided to try something I had never had before, the General Tao Chicken. Small pieces of fried vegetarian chicken was served in a tangy, sweet sauce along with bell peppers and shredded carrots. The amount of "chicken" was huge, and the flavour and texture almost reminded me of ginger beef, except this was unmistakable as imitation chicken. The sauce had less kick than a ginger sauce, and was more sweet without it being like a sweet-and-sour sauce either. Very unique, and definitely suited for sharing for two people with rice.
