Breakfast for Lunch: MEAT Breakfast
I ventured into MEAT for brunch a week or so ago, finding that it is still one of the few places along Whyte serving brunch where I can still get a seat. I noticed that the brunch menu has changed a wee bit, and opted for a new item: the MEAT breakfast, consisting of two eggs any style, hash browns, toast, and a choice of bacon or sausage. My eggs over-medium were perfect, and the hash browns have changed from a patty similar to a potato pancake, to a generous portion of fried and seasoned potato chunks (and I think the seasoning may have included parmesan). Instead of the pork products, I substituted with some of the pulled brisket used for MEAT's brisket benny and sandwich. The combination worked really well, and they sure gave me a lot of it. This was a hearty brunch that was well done.MEAT breakfast - eggs, hash browns, and brisket instead of pork. Toast is coming. #yegfood

Breakfast for Lunch: Garneau Breakfast at Leva
I had an early afternoon meeting this past weekend at Leva Cafe and ordered brunch while I was waiting. I had the Garneau Breakfast, with two eggs over-easy, potato hash (very crispy, home made hash browns, and toast) with smoked salmon instead of the maple bacon. There was a surcharge for the latter, but I was brought a rather substantial plate of salmon, so it was worth it. Loved the portion size, the freshness of the ingredients, and the Americano I ordered with it too. A decadent Saturday treat.

Breakfast for Lunch: Hangover Breakfast at Next Act
Brunch at the Next Act Pub was a perfect choice for a meal prior to a rally taking place just across the street. I had the Hangover Breakfast without bacon, which meant I had two eggs, hash browns, and marble toast.
The eggs were perfectly done and the toast was wonderful - thick and crunchy without being over done. The hash browns were very unique, with their seasoned coating. Plus, the portion was huge. And at only $8, it is a pretty affordable meal.

Breakfast For Lunch: Building an Omelette at Smitty's
Smitty's has a new customizable omelette menu, where you can pick several meat and vegetable fillings with cheese. I went for the most basic variety (one item plus cheese) and had turkey bacon with sauteed mushrooms (instead of cheese).
The omelette was quite substantial, with a lot of turkey bacon running throughout it, and a decent amount of mushrooms too. Cubed hash browns and two slices of toast rounded out the meal.

Breakfast for Lunch: De Dutch
I finally made it to De Dutch for lunch today. The huge menu includes an entire pages of options for pannekoek, a large pancake with various toppings. However, I opted for one of the simpler two-egg breakfasts, in this case eggs over easy with smoked salmon, toast, hash browns, and fruit. The portion size was excellent, and the quality of the smoked salmon was especially good. My eggs were done to perfection, and the bread was also excellent. I found the hash browns a little small to collect easily with my fork, but this is a minor point. Paired with a mimosa, this was a lovely brunch.

Breakfast for Lunch: Blue Plate Breakfast at Blue Plate Diner
It has been a while since I had brunch at Blue Plate Diner, something which was rectified this weekend. I had the Blue Plate Breakfast which has always been my choice, with two eggs, potatoes, toast, and veggie sausage. The potatoes were different from the house made hash browns of the past, and while the eggs used to be advertised on the menu as Hutterite eggs, they were just simple states as eggs, so I am assuming that has changed as well. The veggie sausage has turned into a huge link of slightly sweet soy goodness, and was the star of the meal.
Breakfast for Lunch: Two Egg Breakfast at B's Diner
While running errands on Whyte Avenue on a chilly Friday afternoon, we stopped in to B's Diner (10015 82 Ave.) for a late lunch.. I had the meatless two egg breakfast, which came with toast, potatoes, and tomato slices. The toast was thick, the potatoes were obviously home made, and the eggs were cooked to order. My only problem was that the food was a bit on the greasy side. In fact, although the person I was with had something completely different, we both suffered from stomach problems for the rest of the afternoon. I love the dive-yness of the place, and the menu has some good offerings, but I will have to make sure I can handle having my innards well-lubricated on future visits.

Breakfast for Lunch: Omelette at Three Bananas
I have often had coffee or a snack at Three Bananas, but never breakfast. This changed last Saturday when I was in the Churchill Square area for an event, and decided to seek nourishment first.
My Greek omelette was modified without feta. The combination of avocado, red onions, and tomatoes worked well. The onions were sweet and the tomatoes added moisture and were very fresh. The avocado was a little over-rip, unfortunately. The thick slices of toast made me not miss any potato component of the meal.

Breakfast for Lunch: Tofu Scramble at B's Diner
When I am hanging out on Whyte Avenue, I try to eat and drink at independent establishments. Although I have walked past B's Diner (10037 82 Ave.) many times, I was never able to stop in.
I had breakfast there on Saturday and enjoyed the air conditioned interior on a very hot day. I was also amazed at how extensive the menu was - full of all-day breakfast options, burgers, sandwiches, and other typical greasy spoon diner fare.
I went for the tofu scramble, which was huge. It filled the plate and was full of mushrooms and bell peppers (you get two filling choices), along with toast and hash browns. The tofu was a little on the bland side, but mixed with the potatoes and toast it worked. And for $7 it was a great value.

Breakfast for Lunch: Another Mixed Plate at Smitty's
Eggs, potato pancakes, perogies, French toast, and trimmings. #yegfood, a photo by raise my voice on Flickr.
I was dragged (almost literally) back to Smitty's a couple of weeks ago, except this was the location at Kingsway instead of Westmount. I had another build-my-own platter, this time with perogies, a slice of French toast, eggs, and potato pancakes. Our server was very attentive and brought me loads of condiments - I loved the salsa for the eggs (something I don't normally do, but enjoyed). The potato pancakes could have been cooked a little more - I think I am going to stick with hash browns from now on.
Breakfast for Lunch: Murrieta's
A couple of weeks ago on a busy Saturday, I took time out to enjoy brunch at Murrieta's on Whyte Avenue. I have had supper here a few times, but never breakfast.
I had the basic two eggs and toast dish I normally get at all of the chain places where I have breakfast. This was definitely the champagne and limousine version. The potatoes were hand cut and fried to perfection while the organic grain toast was so excellent, it was almost the highlight of the meal. And I was given two slices instead of just one!
The eggs were wonderful. Locally sourced, they were cooked to perfection and the flavour and yolk colour made them quite distinguishable from their factory farmed counterparts.
I had smoked salmon as my additional protein (bacon, sausage, and other choices were also available). The portion of it was reasonable. So was the price - at around $10 it was delicious and affordable.
