Breakfast for Lunch: Smoked Meat Scrambler at Jay Bee's
I had my first experience ay Jay Bee's (3633 188 Avenue) this past weekend, as the person I was with told me his workmates recommended the place highly. This is a diner with all of the things you would expect to find on the menu: breakfast, burgers, sandwiches, pasta, pizza, and traditional mains like fish and chips and hot turkey. Some of the breakfast offerings are quite unique for this sort of establishment, like the option of beef sausages and turkey bacon with your eggs. I had one of the "scrambles" with smoked meat. It was more like a flat omelette that was so huge, it covered the plate. Underneath was a bagel which was very fresh and actually tasted like a bagel (as opposed to some places where bagels just taste like bread in a round shape), and hash browns. The server said they were going to be cubes, but they were small strings that were a bit greasy, and a bit overcooked in places, but then again this is a "greasy spoon" sort of place. My eggs tasted heavily from the smoked meat, as it should have, and the onions were sweet and cooked. I held the marble cheese that would also have been a part of the dish. I was totally stuffed at the end, and the dish was less than $15. The place was clean, spacious, and the service was good - my server went back to the kitchen several times to get answers to my questions. I will definitely be back if I am in Beverly, and I hope future visits will live up to this one.Smoked meat scrambler #yegfood #eatalberta150

Breakfast For Lunch: Building an Omelette at Smitty's
Smitty's has a new customizable omelette menu, where you can pick several meat and vegetable fillings with cheese. I went for the most basic variety (one item plus cheese) and had turkey bacon with sauteed mushrooms (instead of cheese).
The omelette was quite substantial, with a lot of turkey bacon running throughout it, and a decent amount of mushrooms too. Cubed hash browns and two slices of toast rounded out the meal.

Breakfast For Lunch: Smoked Salmon Omelette
On Saturday morning, it was back to Mill Creek Cafe for brunch. I had the gravlax omelette - gravlax is a kind of smoked salmon cured with sugar, salt, and dill, and Mill Creek Cafe makes their own!
The omelette was light and fluffy, full of smoked salmon, as well as a few red onions for flavour. Capers peppered the eggs and went well with the smoked salmon. I held the soft herbed cheese, not being a dairy person, and enjoyed the home made hash browns and grain toast.
The meal was most memorable for the texture and taste of the eggs, as well as the smoked salmon. This is a definite must-try if you head here for brunch.

Breakfast for Lunch: Vegetarian Omelette at Tasty Tom's
Tasty Tom's (9965 82 Avenue) is a popular diner on the east side of Whyte Avenue. I go here from time to time for breakfast dishes, and decided to try the vegetarian omelette the other day. The peppers were peeled and soft, the onion was sweet, and the mushrooms were plentiful. My meal had to be replaced at first since I asked for no cheese, but if I liked cheese I probably would have been disappointed as it appeared to be melted processed cheese. The potatoes were also not as good as I remembered them - rather bland and under-cooked in places.

Breakfast for Lunch: Omelette at Three Bananas
I have often had coffee or a snack at Three Bananas, but never breakfast. This changed last Saturday when I was in the Churchill Square area for an event, and decided to seek nourishment first.
My Greek omelette was modified without feta. The combination of avocado, red onions, and tomatoes worked well. The onions were sweet and the tomatoes added moisture and were very fresh. The avocado was a little over-rip, unfortunately. The thick slices of toast made me not miss any potato component of the meal.

Breakfast for Lunch: Vegetarian Omelette at Ricky's
Ricky's in the west end is where we ended up for lunch earlier this week. I had a veggie omelette, which had a load of vegetables both inside and outside the egg portion.
The bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, and spinach were sauteed in basil and lemon - lots of lemon. The result was very tangy, a flavour which dominated the meal. The flavour could have been a bit more balanced.
However, vegetable lovers will love the huge portion of veggies, and the toast and hash browns round things out well.

Breakfast for Lunch: Smoked Salmon Omelette
I visited Artisan Resto-Cafe (10732 82 Avenue) today for the first time in ages. Of course, I was most interested in breakfast items.
The smoked salmon, green onion, and dill omelette was my choice. I was concerned that the green onion and dill would overshadow the smoked salmon in flavour, but I was happy to discover that the ingredients were well-balanced. The smoked salmon was definitely the dominant flavour, with the green onion and dill adding accents.
The "grilled pan bread" was basically toast made in a press, while the roasted potatoes were seasoned chunks that were a tad on the dry side but tasty. The fruit on the side was a nice touch.

Breakfast for Lunch: Big Steak Omelette
As if that wasn't enough to eat, three buttermilk pancakes were served with the omelette. I couldn't finish. This was the biggest omelette ever. Next time I'm taking some home.

Breakfast for Lunch: Omelette With Lox and Mushrooms
Today's "Breakfast for Lunch" is my most decadent yet: a fluffy four-egg omelette from New York Bagel Cafe (84 Avenue and Gateway Boulevard) with house-made hash browns, fresh fruit, and a bagel. I opted for multigrain.
Omelettes come with a choice of two fillings, and I went with mushrooms and lox. You can never go wrong with lox and eggs. The mushrooms were sliced portobellos - fresh ingredients really do make all the difference.
Add a house coffee (which is like a latte, except you pour in the steamed milk yourself), and you have one happy and full Paula.
An important note: this is a small cafe that gets very busy on weekends. There is usually a lineup, and once you get a table, quite a wait for the food, which is one reason a handout explaining the concept of "slow food" is given along with the menu. I waited close to an hour for my meal but was prepared with a book and writing materials. Nor was I in a hurry to get anywhere else after. Be patient - the food is worth waiting for.
