Breakfast for Lunch: Latkes and Gravlax at Mill Creek Cafe

Latkes and gravlax at Mill Creek Cafe #yegfood

I had a meeting last week at Mill Creek Cafe and as I had not yet had lunch, got there early to order something. I went for an item that I learned is on the lunch menu as well as the brunch menu: latkes and gravlax. To use the term "latkes" as opposed to "potato pancakes" implies a certain degree of, dare I say it, chutzpah. However, flavour-wise, these latkes taste right. They were the right size and texture, as far as the grated variety goes (most places serve them thick and gummy, with semi-raw pieces of potato). Putting gravlax - home made smoked salmon - with latkes is something different for me, but the flavours worked together. Instead of the Boursin soft cheese I opted for sour cream. A side salad with balsamic dressing rounded out the plate. This is definitely what I would call a Jewish fusion dish.

Breakfast for Lunch: Another Mixed Plate at Smitty's

I was dragged (almost literally) back to Smitty's a couple of weeks ago, except this was the location at Kingsway instead of Westmount. I had another build-my-own platter, this time with perogies, a slice of French toast, eggs, and potato pancakes. Our server was very attentive and brought me loads of condiments - I loved the salsa for the eggs (something I don't normally do, but enjoyed). The potato pancakes could have been cooked a little more - I think I am going to stick with hash browns from now on.

Breakfast for Lunch: Choices at Smitty's

When I was a kid, Smitty's was a regular place my family would eat at for our pancake and French toast fix.

Now many years later, I stepped in to the Westmount location for a lunch to appreciate a valued volunteer. A current promotion is a "pick your own breakfast" menu of around 30 items. Customers can pick four, with an additional charge for extra items.

I am someone who likes eating smaller portions of more kinds of food in one sitting. Almost overwhelmed with choices, I settled on two eggs any style, two beef slider patties, two potato pancakes, and a strawberry crepe.

Even though the crepe different greatly in appearance as depicted on the menu, I easily had enough food for two people. The beef sliders tasted like basic frozen patties cooked on a barbecue, but I was pleased there was one non-pork meat selection.

I am already planning what combination I would like to have on my next visit!
