Fried Chicken Burger - Brick and Whiskey
This fried chicken burger from Brick and Whiskey was total comfort food. The fried chicken was a pounded down thigh, with a crispy coating, coleslaw, and honey hot sauce (which I had to the side - it was total sweet and heat). The brioche bun was toasted and fluffy, while the fries were great.View this post on InstagramA post shared by Paula E. Kirman (@livingsanctuary) on

Original Combo at SFC Seoul Fried Chicken
I have been meaning to try SFC Seoul Fried Chicken for so long, I was thinking I was never going to actually make it there. Fortunately, I got there a little before the holidays, and tried a one-person combo featuring the original recipe of fried chicken, the "potato" slaw as my salad, and a corn fritter as my other side (fries would have been the other option). First of all, the chicken is amazing - so crunchy on the outside, without being too greasy, and moist as anything on the inside. The slaw was something special: shredded potato, cabbage, and yam in black sesame dressing. It was easily the most substantial slaw I have ever had. The fritter really surprised me. It was just one lone ball in a cup with sweet corn milk. I didn't miss fries at all. And at about $12, it was good value.

Five Piece OG Combo at Seoul Fried Chicken
I finally got to try Seoul Fried Chicken the other night, and I think my mind is blown. I went for the five-piece combo with original chicken, slaw as my salad, and the corn fritter as my side (as opposed to fries). The chicken was crunchy and extremely juicy, while the slaw was fresh and had lots of hearty carrot in it. I loved the corn fritter, which was served in a milky, sweet liquid. I did not find the chicken too greasy, and the price point was great. I definitely want to get back here and try another flavour of chicken.

Fried Chicken from Northern Chicken
I finally tried the much-hailed Northern Chicken last week, thanks to Skip the Dishes. I had the original three-piece fried chicken, seasoned with salt and pepper, which had a good crunch on the outside and was so moist on the inside (I think it was brined, which is a technique that helps keep those juices in). I also loved the coleslaw, which comes on the side. We also had the maple creamed corn, which was very thick, and while it had a sweetness, it did not taste much from maple. The chicken was definitely the star here.Just tried @northchickenyeg via @skipthedishes! Wow! #yeg #yegfood #yegeats #foodporn

Korean Fried Chicken at Nara Fried Chicken and Tongkatsu
I have never had Korean Fried Chicken before, and tried it for the first time here in this little west end eatery at 8712 150 Street. I had the half fried chicken, the basic one with no sauce. So crispy on the outside, and so moist on the inside - I think I am a believer now! It also was not greasy or salty at all. I may have liked some dipping sauce to the side, but the pickled turnips provided an interesting flavour profile.Korean fried chicken. My first time. #yeg #yegfood #friedchicken #koreanfriedchicken

Tandoori Fried Chicken at Naanolicious
One of my favourite additions to the new menu at Naanolicious is the Tandoori Fried Chicken. Instead of being finished on the grill, the marinated chicken is plunged into the fryer. It is not breaded - the outside spices and skin crisp up while the inside stays moist. Served with masala-seasoned fries, this is a very comforting and filling meal.

Breakfast for Lunch: Fried Chicken and Cornmeal Flapjacks at MEAT
I was excited to learn that MEAT now has brunch from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. on weekends. I headed there this afternoon after an event nearby and ordered the fried chicken with cornmeal flapjacks. My two pieces of fried chicken were moist on the inside and crispy on the outside, just the way it should be. The three cornmeal flapjacks were fluffy and got most of their flavour from the cornmeal, which was enhanced with the rosemary maple syrup adding some savoury to the sweet. If you like chicken and waffles, you will love this. It is a huge portion to boot, so come hungry.

Fried Chicken at Urban Diner
I love comfort food, and few things I find more comforting than fried chicken. Yesterday evening I went to Urban Diner on the south side to have supper before an event, and had the fried chicken dinner. Three large pieces of chicken were presented to me in a crunchy coating that was not to greasy, on top of a mountain of diner fries: thin, crispy, and tasting from pepper, salt, and vinegar. Some of the chicken could have been juicier on the inside, but the large white piece was surprisingly the most juicy. The chicken gravy on the side went well with the fries.

Fried Chicken at Mercer Tavern
I was filming a rally this week that took place right around the corner from Mercer Tavern So, it just made sense to have lunch there. I had the Mercer Fried Chicken. The two hand-brined pieces were juicy and moist on the inside, and totally crispy on the outside. I opted for the siracha to the side, which was a smart move as I don't like overly spicy fried chicken. The chicken was served on top of a mountain of fresh greens, the occasional bitterness of which complemented the slight saltiness of the chicken. The potato salad was the ultimate in comfort - I just wish the menu had stated that it was finished with bacon bits, which I only discovered after tasting the smokiness in my mouth. The portion is excellent value for the money and I love the atmosphere of the place.
