Korean Fried Chicken at Nara Fried Chicken and Tongkatsu

Korean fried chicken. My first time. #yeg #yegfood #friedchicken #koreanfriedchicken

I have never had Korean Fried Chicken before, and tried it for the first time here in this little west end eatery at 8712 150 Street. I had the half fried chicken, the basic one with no sauce. So crispy on the outside, and so moist on the inside - I think I am a believer now! It also was not greasy or salty at all. I may have liked some dipping sauce to the side, but the pickled turnips provided an interesting flavour profile.

Fish Bites at Naanolicious

Fish bites at Naanolicious #yegfood

I missed a couple of Saturdays on Whyte due to work/community obligations, but managed to drop by Blues On Whyte for a shirt time this past Saturday. In doing so, I had supper at Naanolicious, my go-to Saturday night place. I tried the fish bites for the first time. Delicate pieces of seasoned white fish were fried in a lentil batter. This was a portion made for sharing, and went well with the accompanied dipping sauce. It was sort of like fusion fish and chips, without the chips. I can see the restaurant preparing a smaller amount of fish, with some curry fries on the side, for a really delicious experience.

Veggie Pakora at Naanolicious

Veggie Pakora by raise my voice
Veggie Pakora, a photo by raise my voice on Flickr.

Veggie pakora has never been my favourite item at East Indian restaurants because I find they tend to be very dense and dry. However, I decided to try Naanolicious' take on them when I was there the other day for supper.

I was pleasantly surprised. The pakoras (which is like a fried dumpling of potato and spinach, dipped in lentil dough) were bite-sized but very flavourful - and moist. Yes, they were a little greasy, but enhanced the flavour, along with the chutney served to the side. This is a really nice dish to share as an appetizer.

Comfort Food: Chicken Fingers, Fries, and Salad

Chicken fingers is one of my ultimate comfort foods. Breaded, deep-fried strips of breast meat makes me happy.

I ordered chicken fingers at Avenue Pizza for supper yesterday evening. I received three huge strips of chicken, a mountain of fries, and a small sald on the side, which came as a surprise. The salad wasn't just lettuce either, but a mix of greens. It was a nice contrast to all of the fried food on my plate.

Unpretentious, not too greasy, and filling, this chicken fingers meal was indeed very comforting.
