Shepherd's Pie at Sherlock's

After shooting my first-ever Edmonton Zombie Walk, I was in need of some hot comfort food. I went to the Rice Howard Way location of The Sherlock Holmes Pub and ordered Shepherd's Pie. The dish was deep and piping hot, with beef in a savoury gravy and lots of vegetables, topped with mashed potatoes. Comfort food doesn't get more comforting than this.

I did not expect to end up at Blue Plate Diner for lunch today, but that is exactly where I was.

My vegetarian shepherd's pie was a warm, comforting dish. The interior was a vegan chili with tomatoes, corn, and beans at its core, topped with Dijon butternut and potato mash. The mash tasted mostly from plain potato, and the inside was not too liquidy so that the pie retained its form throughout the meal.

Even though the portion is quite adequate, the meal came with a choice of side so I had to have Blue Plate Diner's fresh-cut fries.

By the way, the other meal on the table is the grilled veggie sandwich and a side of salad.

I don't get to High Level Diner nearly often enough. I made it here this evening though, and had the best shepherd's pie I have ever had.

First of all, the portion size was huge. The dish was filled to the brim with fresh mashed potatoes and organic ground beef that had just enough seasoning and some veggies (corn and peas).

I chose the house-made fries as my side because I cannot resist them. I also cannot resist the house-made ketchup that is so thick and tangy, it almost borders on salsa.

Shepherd's pie is known as comfort food, but I was uncomfortably full afterwards. I was happy though.
