Just Desserts: Bread Pudding at Block 1912

Coffee and bread pudding. #yegfood #coffee #dessert

It was back to Block 1912 for a treat a few weeks ago. I love bread pudding, so was eager to try theirs. Warmed up, with some whipped cream on top, the dessert was enjoyable but read more like a piece of cake in a bed of syrup than a bread pudding. The pudding itself was not moist enough, and I just felt like I was eating bits of cake rather than bread. I liked it - it was sweet and comforting - but I think it needs a better description.

Just Desserts: Blueberry Bread Pudding at Brewsters

A late evening trip to Brewsters a couple of weeks ago had me ordering a dessert instead of a meal. I had been wanting to try the blueberry bread pudding for a while, but am always too full after meal to even entertain the thought of dessert. The pudding was served warm in a skillet, with vanilla gelato offsetting the heat. Very dense and rich, the blueberries were not overwhelming but added colour and texture in addition to flavour.

Just Desserts: Almond and Salted Caramel Bread Pudding

As I sat in Leva after lunch with my laptop, I decided I wanted something decadent to go with my Americano. I chose the almond and salted caramel bread pudding, having tried another one of their bread puddings over the summer and finding it an unforgettable experience. The pudding was heated enough to make it slightly runny and soft, with a shot glass of cream on the side for extra moisture (that is not a glass of milk pictured in the photograph). The caramel was the star of the dessert, with just the right amount of saltiness to mix with the sweet.

Just Desserts: Bread Pudding at Cafe Leva

Bread Pudding

While it is no secret that I adore the coffee and pizza at Cafe Leva, I have actually never tried one of their desserts. I stopped in there this past week and had the bread pudding. It was presented in a flat square, slightly heated so that the chocolate on top had melted. The results were rich, buttery, and sometimes crispy. The portion of cream on the side added moisture and even more richness. An absolutely decadent treat.

Just Desserts: Bread Pudding at the Sugar Bowl

My dinner companion wanted dessert after our meals at the Sugar Bowl. I personally was too full to even contemplate a dessert for myself, but dug in for a spoonful or two (or three) of his bread pudding.

And what a bread pudding it was. Warm and soft and layered and just sweet enough. The caramel drizzle added more sweetness and the dollop of whipped cream on top more richness.

I don't think any treat at the Sugar Bowl can take the place of their awesome cinnamon bun, but this was definitely a dessert to remember. Next time, I am going to have the whole thing!
