When I visit Credo Coffee, I usually order a coffee or latte. However, when my stomach is not cooperating, tea is a better option. Last week, I had a chai latte at Credo for the first time. It was very smooth, creamy, and warm - very comforting. The spicy tea flavour was not terribly strong - it read more like black tea with a but of an extra bite - but it was still a very pleasant drink.

Coffee Break: Vanilla Chai at Naanolicious

Vanilla is the chai flavour of the month for January at Naanolicious. I didn't find it too sweet - it had just enough vanilla to enhance the milky, black tea.

Palak Paneer Wrap at Remedy

A beautiful Victoria Day Monday - and hunger - inspired me to ride my bike to the new 124 Street location of Remedy. I had one of my favourite menu items that I have not had in years: the palak paneer wrap. While I could have done with more paneer, the wrap was stuffed with filling and the crunchy pita wrap made for texture heaven. It was not too spicy and went well with an iced chai.

Chai, Samosa, Dahl Combo at Remedy

I stopped in to the Jasper Avenue location of Remedy on Friday to grab a chai and some samosas before heading to film a rally. I decided to get the combo of one large chai, a dhal soup, and two samosas. I have never had the dhal soup before. It has a yellow lentil base, is very spicy, and if it was colder outside, would certainly have defrosted me. Many of the luscious lentils settled at the bottom of the bowl, which made the soup get thicker the further down I got. My samosas were packed with potatoes and spices, but were almost cold by the time my plate got to me. I have a feeling they were sitting while the soup was being prepared. I forgot that the chai would be waiting on the counter, but it was still warm when I finally got up to get it. I was also full for the rest of the day. At $12, this is a combo with value and flavour.

Remedy for Hunger - Palak Paneer

I haven't been to any location of Remedy in ages, so when I was craving Indian food for lunch earlier this week I headed over to the downtown location.

The meal was huge! Thick, pureed spinach curry with firm paneer cheese and lots of chickpeas - just to make the meal even heavier. I paired my meal with rice, which was incredibly aromatic. For only $10, this seemed like about twice the portion I would get at other places, for half the price!

Combined with the iced Kashmiri chai as my beverage, there was no way I was going to finish. The next time I eat at Remedy, I will bring a friend!

Coffee Break - Chocolate Chai

When I want a hot drink and don't want coffee, I usually go for chai. On my last visit to Wild Earth Bakery I decided to try the chocolate chai - it had the warmth and spice of chai with an overtone of chocolate that did not dominate. A really great winter drink.

After a long day of marching and rallying, I made the trek over to Highlevel Diner for supper. For my beverage, I did not want alcohol, and it was rather late in the day for coffee, so I opted for a chai latte. Smooth, creamy, and delicious it was. Just what I needed.

Although I was having one of those days where I was all coffee-ed out, I was meeting a friend "for coffee" at the Whyte Avenue location of Da Capo. We both had chai lattes. Da Capo uses chai from Remedy and it tastes fantastic. Total win here.

Coffee Break: Chai at Cafe Mosaics

The chai at Cafe Mosaics is only available seasonally during the fall and winter. Which means you still have a couple of months to get down there to enjoy a steaming, spicy cup of what is one of the best chais I have ever had.

It was so hot, I finished my meal and the drink was still steaming. It was so spicy, I could hear my taste buds singing. It kept me warm on a cold day. Delicious.

Coffee Break: Iced Chai Latte at Wild Earth Cafe

I wanted something cool this afternoon while riding my bicycle around the neigbourhood on errands. However, I did not want coffee. I opted for an iced chai latte at Wild Earth Cafe on 85 Avenue and 142 Street.

It certainly was cold and refreshing. The chai flavour was not overwhelmingly strong and I could perhaps done with a little more of it, but it was better than being bitter which I often experience elsewhere. Perhaps next time I will try the chocolate chai.

I spent Sunday afternoon running errands and needed something warm and nourishing. A chair latte at Wild Earth Cafe (85 Avenue and 142 Street) was in order. It's creamy and heavy on the cinnamon topping. The spice mixture tastes familiar, as someone who has had a chai latte in just about every coffee and tea shop around - definitely better than the chain shops.

Cheers abounded when news of a downtown location of Remedy was announced. Fans of the existing south side location were already familiar with the huge array of hot and cold drinks (in particular, the unique chai), reasonably priced Indian food, and artistic atmosphere.

The new location at 10279 Jasper Avenue has only been open a short time, but is already making waves in the downtown core. It is one of the few places in the area open late. The atmosphere is brighter and more spacious, with menus on electronic screens rather than blackboards. The pervasive smell of curry is much fainter. But the place is hopping with everyone from hippies to hipsters and everyone in between.

I had an iced Kashmiri chai latte. The spicy, milky treat was topped with crushed pistachios and dried rose petals, adding for some red to contrast the dominant green. The drink was refreshing and perfectly seasoned.
